Wrapping Up the Blankets

We used our final donated fabric today to complete our Setvice Project! As a class, we counted all the blankets we completed as a team!  We have 30 blankets to donate to two area shelters! We will donate to A Room at the Inn and Gateway 180- both highly recommended and reputable shelters!

Super Strategies!

One big idea about multiplication I am very focused on, is helping students understand what multiplication is- equal groupings.  Once we have a solid understanding about what we are doing when we multiply, we can justify, apply, and question strategies that make us successful for multiplying larger numbers.  We had a Strategy Showdown yesterday so that I could check in with students to see which strategies they use to multiply larger numbers!  We ran out of room on the board!!!

Farewell Sam!

M   Our dear friend and classmate Sam is moving back to China this weekend and we are sad to see him leave!  Sam is a great friend to many Schuh Stars and we hope to stay in contact by writing pen pal letters with him!
We planned and created a special book as a class gift.  Each student wrote and decorated a page!  We hope Sam will keep this book as a memory of our fun times together!  Many teachers joined us in a farewell party- Mrs. Engel his 2nd grade teacher, was a big surprise!  :)
Sam showed the class pictures of his school and shared where his home is on a map.  Then he shared some pictures from his home town- Changchun.  The class enjoyed hearing about this very much!
We will miss you so much Sam!

Such a busy day

K   This was our mantra for today...

In Science, we introduced the crayfish! We observed and learned the safe way to pick up the crayfish!

For math, we enjoyed some STEM activities!  Mrs. Stouffer taught us how to code small robots in two different ways-one by color and the other using an iPad app.
Here is the Sphero robot.  It is coded using an iPad app.

This is the Ozobot robot! We coded this robot to dance, tornado, and more!
While we were in library, the kids showed me the Eyptian Cartouche they created in Art!
Our service project with the blankets is going great and continues this week! Let me know if you want to volunteer!!!

Multiplication Fact Fluency

Now that we are multiplying larger numbers, it is helpful to be fluent in multiplication facts.  We took a pre-assessment of all multiplication facts 2-9.  Students reviewed their pre-assessment with an answer key and then chose the multiplication facts they need to continue practicing.  We made flashcards today and stapled them into our planners.  Please review these facts often!

Big ideas and bigger hearts

I've said it before and I'll say it again, this group of students knocks my socks off! They ask big questions about the world around them.  It is normal for a Third Grader to ask questions about the world around them, however this group of students does not settle for seeking answers- they want to solve problems they see in the world around them!  These students ARE being the change they want to see in the world and it is such a privilege to witness daily!
Here are some pictures of the first day of our blanket service project!  We completed 5 blankets today in 30 minutes!

Hour of Code

Mrs. Stouffer led our class through an hour of code today!  The Hour of Code is a global movement reaching tens of millions of students in 180+ countries. Anyone, anywhere can organize an Hour of Code event. One-hour tutorials are available in over 40 languages.  Students enjoyed learning what coding is, how to use coding, and then working through coding activities.  Check out hourofcode.com for more information!

Our Changing Plants

Before Fall break, we observed seeds with the question in mind- are seeds alive? Students debated and formed an investigation to answer this question.
Today we noticed some major changes that occurred over our break! Students used their notebooks to describe the changes.
We also observed our Fast Plants! Students noticed a new structure that grew-flowers!
